Mostofa Sarwar Farooki was born (1973) Dhaka,Bangladesh. He is a modern Bangladeshi film director, screen writer and producer. Normally called him “farooki” or “faruqi. He has directed films, mega serials for cable television, ground breaking TV commercials and three full length feature film. His films have been shown in international film festivals in South Korea,Abu Dhabi,USA,Italy,India,Thailand and elsewhere. Farooki is one of those young directors in Bangladesh who has set a new trend in terms of presentation and direction after the media boom began in Bangladesh in the late 1990s.His latest film Third Person Singular Number was premiered in Pusan Int. Film Festival (2009). It was also in one of the most exclusive competition of 2009 "Middle East International Film Festival (Abu Dhabi)" with 3 films from Cannes, 2 from Venice, 4 from Toronto, and 1 each from San Sebastian and Pusan.His previous two films, which he considers to be an educational effort, were Bachelor (2003) and Made in Bangladesh (2007). Farooki is widely considered to be one of the most brilliant and influential movie makers of our time.
Early Life
Farooki is a self-made filmmaker. In an interview, he jokingly told "I'm a student of World University of Mistakes. My mistakes are my teacher". As he never studied in film making or never got the chance to assist any director, he has been learning by doing himself. Actually he fully follows the filming techniques of Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami.
Cinematic Style
Farooki’s body of work address such themes as middle class angst, urban youth romance, frustration about own culture and conservative Muslim concepts of guilt and redemption. Farooki has created a new genre of Bangladeshi films, which are casual, down-to-earth, humorous, sometimes poetic, and completely different from traditional drama. Before farooki, the use of everyday colloquial language in films was considered by many directors as rude. His neo-realistic approach to cinema became instantly popular and propelled a new generations of film makers. His works do have a documentary feel. He mainly follows the cinematic styles of the prominent film maker Abbas Kiarostami and also he was inspired by the best Iraninan film maker,
